Se trata de otro modo de decir que, mientras la influencia de las mareas de la Luna retarda muy gradualmente la rotación de la Tierra, aumenta también muy gradualmente la distancia de la Luna respecto de nosotros. Por ello, como he dicho al principio de este ensayo, la Luna no está cayendo, sino alzándose.
Mientras la Luna se aleja de nosotros, su diámetro angular aparente disminuye. En un pasado alejado, estaba claramente más cerca y, por lo tanto, era mayor en aspecto. En un lejano futuro, se hallará de modo claro más lejos y, por ello, será menor en aspecto.
